D-DAY FOR THE BUSINESS - I’VE PUBLISHED MY FIRST BOOK

Today, June 6 2023, marks exactly 79 years since Operation Neptune was put into action. We refer to this momentous turning point in the history of Western Europe as D-Day, a term that has itself entered the lexicon to refer to an important juncture in pretty much any context you care to name.

Well, I’m going to add to that chorus. And absolutely no disrespect is implied to any of the brave men who landed on the shores of Normandy in 1944 when I say that this is the latest D-Day for my business, an important milestone in the story of LeBoo Media.

Because today my first business book is available to buy from Amazon.

Why questions can be more valuable than answers

It’s called 21 Questions. It lists and discusses the questions you should ask yourself when you are in the process of planning, launching and building a business.

I wrote it because I looked back to the relaunch of LeBoo Media as a copywriting consultancy in Kingston some six years ago and asked myself how I might have done things differently.

One answer that came back instantly was that I wish I’d had a more structured approach to the process of getting a business off the ground and sending it soaring skywards.

Because when you are setting up a business, you hoover up advice from left, right and centre. You accept – particularly if you’re doing this for the first time – that there is plenty you don’t know, and an awful lot you need to learn as quickly as possible.

The result is that an incredible amount of information gets gathered in and shoved into your head in no particular order. Applying it shrewdly to your own situation can be tricky, simply because of the sheer volume of noise going on in there.

What this book suggests is that you take a step back and look at the questions you need to ask yourself. By coming up with the answers that are right for you, you can get a much clearer idea of the steps you need to take to push onwards and upwards.

If I’d known then what I know now…

While I was writing the book, one of my networking pals jovially warned me: “You do know you won't get rich from writing a business book, don’t you?”

In my defence, I did know that. It never occurred to me to write a book to open up a new income stream for LeBoo Media. I wrote a book because I wanted to be able to say I’m a “published author”, and because I knew I could.

And because I really do wish I’d had a guidebook like this at my side in the early months of 2017.

Throughout the writing process, I had a strong sense of me speaking to my much younger self (I was a youthful 53 at the time). I’m very proud of the progress LeBoo Media has made as an award-winning business over the last six years.

It hasn’t happened without an awful lot of help from an awful lot of wonderful people, some of whom get a mention in the book. If this is a small step in my “paying it forward”, then so much the better.
